28 February, 1922: Protectorate is terminated, Egypt is recognised as an independent State

95 years ago, the 28th of February, the Kingdom of Egypt regained its independence, despite the stationing of British troops on its soil.

It was Gamal Abdel Nasser in 1954 who make them packed-up, and get rid of the foreign influence of the Suez Canal. At that time, the diva Oum Kalthoum is at the peak of her career, viewed by many as a Queen. President Nasser asked her to collaborate with  Mohamed Abdelwahab, her greatest rival at that time,  to composed one of the most famous songs of the singer, “Enta El Omri” (You Are My Life, words of Ahmad Shafik Kamel).

Few months after Six-Day War, for the unique concert outside Arab World, at the Olympia (Paris),  Oum Kalthoum sang “You Are My Life” , for a show over 3 hours long. That was fifty years ago, in 1967.
